Koonung Heights Uniting Church

Our church has had a long history in sustainability –possibly before it was called sustainability. For many years we ran a community market where once loved goods were recycled. In more recent years our major step toward sustainability, and notwithstanding the upfront cost, was the installation of solar panels together with the removal of our gas heating system and the installation of an electric system.

As significant aspect of the work of our Social Justice Group has been spear-heading climate action awareness activities. We have listened to two members of our congregation speak about their experience as volunteers in Vanuatu, and the impact of climate change there. During COVID we ran a study, via ZOOM, on climate change and its impacts. We participated in the Climate Change awareness event “Making a Noise about Climate”. We hosted a speaker from the local community group “Lighter Footprints” and produced a brochure with hints and tips for personal use around the home. We also produced, for each household, a “Season of Creation” pamphlet.

Koonung Heights Uniting Church were presented with the Five Leaf Eco-Awards Basic Certificate and Eco-Worship Awards on the 23rd of April 2023.
